The SCL-90 was developed by L.R. Derogatis as a practical, simple and valuable scale for identifying mental health status and for group mental health screening. The scale consists of 90 items, including feeling, thinking, emotions, behaviour, interpersonal relationships, lifestyle habits, etc. It can assess mental health status at a given point in time, usually over a week. It is scored on a five-point scale (from 1 to 5), where 1 = none, 2 = mild, 3 = moderate, 4 = fairly severe and 5 = severe.
This report uses age-specific norms with statistically validated validity for those aged >=18 years; adolescents aged 13-17 years should use the MMPI-A-RF.
The scale examines a person's mental health in terms of the expression of physical and psychological symptoms. If you score higher on certain symptoms and feel that certain symptoms are more severe in frequency and intensity, you should be concerned about problems in this area. The scale consists of 10 symptom factors: somatic, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobia, paranoia, psychoticism and other (sleep, eating, etc.).
As the self-report scale measures the severity of symptoms experienced by an individual over a period of time, the scale score should be interpreted with caution. A high score does not necessarily indicate that a person has a very serious mental health problem. A high score on some subscales may be due to the person experiencing some difficulties at the time. Therefore, the reasons for and authenticity of a high score (T-score>=60) should be further understood using the MMPI-2 or MMPI-3.

High
Low

✦Somatisation:T60
High: Indicates that the individual frequently experiences cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and respiratory complaints, and that these symptoms are more pronounced. Headache, spinal pain and muscular pain are also higher in frequency and severity and may be accompanied by significant somatic manifestations of anxiety. This indicates the need for further assessment and intervention.

✦Obsessive-compulsive disorder:T60
High: Indicates that the person frequently experiences senseless thoughts, impulses or behaviours that they cannot get rid of, and that these symptoms are more pronounced and may interfere with daily life. Perceptual disturbances, such as a blank mind or memory loss, are also more common. This suggests the need for further psychological assessment and intervention.

✦Interpersonal sensitivity:T48
Normal: Indicates that the individual's feelings of low self-esteem and discomfort in interpersonal relationships are within the normal range, and that the individual may occasionally feel uncomfortable when comparing him/herself to others, but that these feelings do not interfere with daily life and social activities.

✦Depression:T47
Normal: Indicates that the person's symptoms of depression are within the normal range and that he or she may occasionally feel depressed and bitter, but these feelings are infrequent and not severe. Interest in life is still present, and appetite and activity are relatively normal. There may be occasional feelings of disappointment or sadness, but these do not interfere with daily life.

✦Anxiety:T63
High: Indicates that the individual is frequently anxious, with frequent symptoms of inability to rest, nervousness and tension, accompanied by significant somatic symptoms (e.g. tremors). Wandering anxiety and panic attacks are also more common. This suggests the need for further psychological assessment and intervention.

✦Anger-Hostility:T63
High: Indicates that the person often has hostile thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and is easily bored and argues with others. There may be dropping of objects or fighting and occasional uncontrollable impulsive outbursts. This indicates the need for further psychological assessment and intervention.

✦Phobic anxiety:T60
High: Indicates that the individual has frequent feelings of anxiety, especially when travelling, in open spaces, crowds, public places and on transport. Symptoms of social anxiety are more pronounced and these anxieties may cause some disruption to daily life. This indicates the need for further psychological assessment and intervention.

✦Paranoid ideation:T60
High: Indicates that the person frequently exhibits paranoid thinking, such as projective thinking, hostility, suspicion, delusions about relationships, amnesia, passive experiencing and exaggeration. These thoughts can cause some disruption in daily life and relationships. This suggests the need for further psychological assessment and intervention.

✦Psychoticism:T61
High: Indicates that the person often exhibits psychotic symptoms such as frequent fantasies, thought broadcasting, feelings of control and thought insertion. The person may feel that these symptoms cause some disruption to their daily life and psychological state. This suggests the need for further psychological assessment and intervention.

✦Sleep/Diet:T40
Normal: Indicates that the person's sleep and eating are within the normal range. Occasionally, the person may have poor sleep quality or irregular eating, but these problems are infrequent, not serious and have little impact on daily life.

✦Total score:T63
High: Indicates that the individual's overall psychological symptoms are more pronounced and that he or she may experience frequent psychological distress and discomfort. This suggests the need for further psychological assessment and intervention to improve mental health.

▲Recommendations
✦Overall score is high:
Seek help: Seek professional psychological help as soon as possible for detailed psychological assessment and treatment.
Self-care: Focus on self-care, such as getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet and taking moderate exercise.
Establish habits: Establish healthy lifestyle habits to reduce life stressors.

▲How should others get along with me?
✦Overall scores are high:
Suggesting professional help: encouraging them to seek professional psychological help, expressing understanding and support.
Active listening: Patiently listening to their distress without judgement and offering emotional support.

If the individual perceives these symptoms to be more severe on multiple dimensions, mental health counselling should be intensified and, in severe cases, further assessment and diagnosis should be undertaken at a reputable mental health counselling and treatment facility.
